ABC's 'Day of Giving' for Hurricane Sandy

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources/lifestyle_community/community&id=8870649&rss=rss-wls-article-8870649

The Disney/ABC Television Group has designated Monday, November 5, 2012 as a "Day of Giving" across programs.

<dig:D3text>Following the announcement made Thursday by Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company of a $2 Million donation for Hurricane Sandy relief and rebuilding efforts, the Disney/ABC Television Group Thursday announced that it will designate Monday, November 5, 2012 as a "Day of Giving" across network and syndicated programming spanning News, Daytime, Primetime and Late Night, encouraging the tens of millions of viewers engaged throughout the day to help those impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

In commenting on the wide-reaching response to the devastating storm, Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney-ABC Television Group, said, "The effects of Hurricane Sandy have impacted millions of people across the entire North East, including many of our co-workers, friends and families. This unprecedented devastation demanded an unprecedented response, so our team came up with the 'Day of Giving.' This coordinated effort between network and syndicated programming spanning News, Daytime, Primetime and Late Night will reach tens of millions of viewers with a specific call to action…to do what Americans do best, and pull together in support of those who are suffering. I'm incredibly proud of the team and all of our programs for this amazing response."

"Good Morning America" will start the "Day of Giving" by dedicating the entire 8:00 a.m. hour to raising money for Sandy Relief efforts. ABC News anchors, reporters and employees will band together to encourage people to donate to the American Red Cross.

The torch will pass to "LIVE with Kelly and Michael," where the show will integrate "Day of Giving" messaging into their highly anticipated Halloween episode (which was moved due to the impact of the storm).

The ladies of "The View" will discuss the "Day of Giving" and encourage their audience to donate to the American Red Cross relief efforts, and "The Chew" will do the same.

"Katie," which designated the entire hour on Wednesday, October 31 to Hurricane Sandy, will take up the mantle of the "Day of Giving" and engage her viewers in these relief efforts as well.

The ABC Owned Stations and local ABC affiliates will integrate "Day of Giving" messaging into their local news throughout the day, calling on their local communities to help those impacted by the storm.

"World News with Diane Sawyer" will participate with messaging around "Day of Giving" and the continuing impact of the storm.

"Dancing With The Stars" is planning to personalize sections of the live show Monday night with "Day of Giving" messaging.

"Nightline" will devote time to the "Day of Giving" and the impact of Hurricane Sandy, and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," which has been airing from Brooklyn all this week and encouraging viewers to give to the Red Cross to help rebuild that impacted areas, will end the "Day of Giving" on Monday with special messaging and calls to action for his viewers.

This unprecedented response joins The Walt Disney Company's existing relief and rebuilding efforts, which include the recently announced $2 million cash commitment to those severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy. One million dollars will be donated to the American Red Cross for immediate, critical assistance, and another $1 million will be designated for organizations working on rebuilding efforts. In addition, employee eligible donations to organizations involved in disaster relief will be matched, dollar for dollar, by Disney Employee Matching Gifts: A Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation.

ESPN will be running public service announcements to engage their viewers in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts throughout its programming, including coverage of The New York City Marathon and Monday Night Football.

And Disney/ABC Television Group has already developed and implemented a deep portfolio of assets to generate awareness and support for the victims of Hurricane Sandy which have been shared across all of the DATG platforms. American Red Cross PSA's have been running on ABC owned stations and affiliates throughout the country since Tuesday. From "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to "The View," "The Chew," "Good Morning America" and "Katie," calls to action have been incorporated into programming, letting millions of viewers know how they can help. In addition, American Red Cross online banner ads have been on abc.com and abcnews.com.; Disney Channel and Disney Radio are running audience-appropriate American Red Cross PSA's; and Thursday night, the Country Music Awards will open with a dedication to those affected by Hurricane Sandy, and will include information on how our ABC audience can contribute.</dig:D3text>

ABC 7 Chicago celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with news reports, parade broadcast, Ñ Beat Special, and Hispanic Heritage Month vignettes

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources/lifestyle_community/community&id=8802209&rss=rss-wls-article-8802209

ABC 7 Chicago will highlight the rich culture and traditions of Chicago's Latino community during Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15.

<dig:D3text>ABC 7 Chicago will highlight the rich culture and traditions of Chicago's Latino community during Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15. ABC 7 will celebrate Hispanic heritage with special news reports; the broadcast of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade; a half-hour edition of THE Ñ BEAT; and a series of vignettes featuring ABC 7's Stacey Baca, Michelle Gallardo, John Garcia, Theresa Gutierrez, Sylvia Perez and Roz Varon who talk about their own Hispanic heritage and how family support helped shape their success.
To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, all the pageantry of Mexican culture will be on display when ABC 7's Theresa Gutierrez hosts the Little Village Chamber of Commerce 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade airing Sunday, September 9
from 2-3 pm. ABC 7 Chicago is the only TV station in town broadcasting the parade. Participating in this colorful community event will be members of the ABC 7 News team including Ben Bradley, Cheryl Burton, Michelle Gallardo, John Garcia, Hosea Sanders, and Roz Varon, who will be riding atop the ABC 7 float. (The parade begins at noon.) During the parade, the late Raul Muñoz will be honored as one of the most successful business pioneers in Little Village. Muñoz passed away earlier this year in February 2012.
"Not everyone knows that the 2nd highest grossing retail district in Chicago next to Michigan Avenue is 26th Street, in the heart of the Little Village community. During the Mexican Independence Day parade the area becomes an all-day block party. It's a celebration unique to the city of Chicago," says producer Edgar Vargas, excited to once again be producing the parade broadcast.
Throughout September and October, ABC 7 will broadcast Hispanic Heritage Month vignettes spotlighting Stacey Baca, Michelle Gallardo, John Garcia, Theresa Gutierrez, Sylvia Perez, and Roz Varon.
Then, ABC 7 will broadcast its Emmy Award-winning program, THE Ñ BEAT, hosted by Theresa Gutierrez, with special contributions by ABC 7's John Garcia and Stacey Baca, Saturday, September 29 at 6:30 pm with an encore presentation on Sunday, October 7 at 4:30 pm.
One of the upcoming stories on THE Ñ BEAT focuses on Ailyn Pèrez, a Chicago born Mexican-American soprano. From the stage at Elk Grove Village High School to the opera's international stage, Ms. Perez discusses how she accomplished her dream to perform as a classically trained vocalist.

Bud Billiken Parade entertains for 83rd year

The 83rd annual Bud Billiken Parade and picnic in Chicago stepped off Saturday morning on Martin Luther King Drive and featured performers, politicians and a message for students.

<dig:D3text>The 83rd annual Bud Billiken Parade and picnic in Chicago stepped off Saturday morning on Martin Luther King Drive and featured performers, politicians and a message for students.

It was a picture perfect day with a picture perfect parade to go along with it.

"My family, my crowd, the community," said Quenetta Davis. "The community is number one down here."

"It's good for the kids to be a part of it also, we really like it," Helena Covington said.

Bud Billiken is the oldest and largest African American parade in the United States and Saturday, as always, thousands came out to cheer on the floats and spend time with family in what has become a yearly celebration of youth and education.

"Back to school. It's a great way to get started. All my children, family members, we all come," said Marvel Davis.

"Study hard, get ahead, that's how you get ahead in life," said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy. "Family and education and religion. Those are the three things."

There was something for everyone to enjoy. There were the traditional marching bands, and floats, including ABC7's, and then there was a touch of the exotic as a group of camels, zebras and even tigers joined in the parade.

Grand Marshall and deputy assistant to the president, Michael Strautmanis, had a message from the Obamas.

"It's a gorgeous day," he said. "I'm so happy to be here representing the president on the South Side Of Chicago. The president and the first lady asked me to come here and tell everybody, let's have a terrific school year."

And while most children here still have a few more weeks off before going back to school, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who also walked in the parade, alluded to the newly implemented longer school day for the city's public schools

"For the first time in Chicago Public School history we're going to have a full school day and a full school year that is equal to the potential of our children," he said. "We're no longer going to shortchange them."

Runners, walkers, and survivors of leukemia and other blood cancers are gearing up for the ''18th Annual ABC 7 Jim Gibbons 5K,'' which steps off at 6:25 p.m. Thursday with live coverage on ABC7 News at 6 p.m.

<dig:D3text>It's more than a run/walk. It's helping improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals with leukemia, lymphoma or myelodysplastic syndromes -- blood cancers that will claim tens of thousands of lives this year. Runners, walkers, and survivors of leukemia and other blood cancers are gearing up for the ''18th Annual ABC 7 Jim Gibbons 5K.'' The run/walk kick-off will be broadcast live at 6:25 pm during ABC 7's 6:00 pm newscast with commentary by honorary event co-chairs, ABC 7's Janet Davies and Frank Mathie. The event takes place on Thursday, June 14 and benefits the Leukemia Research Foundation. Registration opens at 4:30 pm.
The run/walk will be held in Lincoln Park, 2551 N. Cannon Drive in Chicago. During the event there will be a bags tournament, awards ceremony and a performance by Black Cadillac Band.
Each year, Davies and Mathie co-chair this event to honor the memory of friend and colleague Jim Gibbons, an investigative reporter for ABC 7, who succumbed to leukemia in 1994.
"The last 17 years of this event has produced nearly $1.5 million in net revenue for critical, lifesaving research into the causes and cures of leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers," said LRF Executive Director Kevin Radelet. "Funding research to find a cure is the only permanent solution…something the organization has been devoted to for the past 60 years."
Cash awards will be given to the top three male and top three female runners. Medals will be given to the top three male and female runners in each of several age groups.
