<dig:D3text>At Chicago Women Developers, you can learn to design your own website, and it all started with a simple quest by a Chicago entrepreneur. You probably know that behind every webiste, there is the code, a language telling the computer what to do. And that's about how much Melissa Pierce said she knew about computer programming when she had an idea.

"I had just finshed a documentary film, and I was trying to build a website for that," she said.

It was a simple idea to build her own website, and she knew enough to get started.

"I saw one of my friends who said, 'Come to open hacking, everyone's welcome, bring your project," she said.
So she went off to an open hack night, a sort of a support group for progrmmers. But she never expected the response from the group of men.</dig:D3text>

Joint Center for Energy Storage Research could make Chicago area hub for battery technology

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=8904415&rss=rss-wls-article-8904415

A new multi-million dollar energy resource center could turn Chicago into the battery capital of the United States. The hope is that center will create environmentally friendly batteries for products like electric vehicles.

<dig:D3text>A new multi-million dollar energy resource center could turn Chicago into the battery capital of the United States.

The hope is that center will create environmentally friendly batteries for products like electric vehicles.

The goal is for Argonne National Laboratory to create a research institute for battery technology in Illinois that will combine research around the country into one location.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Chicago and Illinois will become the center of that research and all the promise of jobs and economic opportunities that come from that.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu joined Governor Pat Quinn and Mayor Emanuel to announce a team led by Argonne National Laboratory has been selected for an award of up to $120 million over five years to establish a new batteries and energy storage hub in suburban Lemont.

"Very important for American industrial competitiveness, very important that research be intimately linked with manufacturing in a way that will actually propel the United States forward and this is what the hub concept is about," said Chu.

"To create in five years batteries that are more powerful and cheaper, we are taking coordinated mission driven programs here that will lead to breakthroughs in energy science and train and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers ," said Eric Isaacs, director of Argonne.
"We are going to develop batteries that are five times more powerful, five times cheaper within five years. That is an ambitious goal."

"Other labs were competing for this grant, which is why I am so proud that we here in Chicago and state of Illinois are going to be the center of a promising field," said Mayor Emanuel.

The hub will be called the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research.
It will combine the power of five Department of Energy national laboratories, five universities, and the private sector in an effort to achieve revolutionary advances in battery performance for electric cars and for use on our aging power grid.

Governor Quinn said he is providing millions of dollars to help build the state-of-the-art facility.

"This particular industry, this battery technology industry, is a $42 billion worldwide industry, and it's growing at about 8 percent a year, and we want to get part of that," said Quinn.

Mayor Emanuel said the hub will make Chicago the electric vehicle and batteries capital of the nation, and will create incentives to encourage the making of more electric vehicles.

The hope is that Illinois will become the epicenter of research on this subject.</dig:D3text>

<dig:D3text>Brad Spirrison, managing editor, Appolicious Inc., stops by to talk about apps. A bit older, but still the best price comparison app around. If you're in a store, you can scan the barcode or take a picture of an item you are interested. Within seconds, you will find out if Amazon or one of its merchants offers the product for a better price. Retailers in 2011 complained that consumers were effectively using their stores as showrooms, and purchased competitor products from within their stores. While this is admittedly tacky, the method is not going away and ultimately brings down pricing for everyone. eBay also offers the Red Laser barcode scanner for iOS and Android for free, and there are several other independent competitors.

Call it the Revenge of the Retailer. Rather than trying to beat Amazon/eBay at their own game, Macy's this year is partnering with eBay. There are app-exclusive sales and alerts for unadvertised sales pushed to consumers while they stand in line. Other major retailers upping their games this year are Sears (app exclusive specials), and Walmart (interactive maps of locations)

Presidential Debate 2012: Mitt Romney 'more expressive' in debate, facial analysis determines

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/national_world&id=8835760&rss=rss-wls-article-8835760

A Purdue University expert analyzed the facial expressions of President Obama and Mitt Romney after their first debate.

<dig:D3text>Many people are analyzing what President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney had to say in Wednesday night's debate. But one college professor was closely watching the debaters' facial expressions to determine what they were feeling during the debate.

The CIA, the FBI and even some members of local law enforcement are trained to spot what are known as micro-expressions, a slight lip raise, a glance off, any small, almost imperceptible movement that shows what a person is really feeling.

Mix in videotape and some fancy software, and a computer will do it for you, picking up simple movements in key areas of the face like the forehead, eyes, lips and jaw.
The computer program then translates those movements into emotions like surprise, fear, disgust, anger or pride.

Put it all together and you get a snapshot of how the candidate himself was feeling during the first presidential debate of 2012.

Squirreled away in a computer science lab on the campus of Purdue University, Chris Kowal analyzes 395 specific points on the human face.

"Overall, Mitt Romney was much more expressive," Kowal said.

Those expressions can give insight, says the professor.
His analysis found, during the debate, anger, scorn and pride in himself were the most common emotions shown by Mitt Romney.

Barack Obama frequently showed pride, happiness, but also sadness. That may be the computer picking up on the president's frequent downward gazes.

"He didn't connect on an emotional level with those voters because he himself wasn't experiencing the emotions that they were looking for," Kowal said.

Experts say those subtle emotional tells play out in how the candidates are perceived.

Fifty-eight million people watched the debate on television.
Adding importance to first impressions: 10 million people shared their take on Twitter.

"The social media circulates the contents of the debate much faster," said Northwestern University's David Zarefsky. "They make it a bit more irreverent, and they are more willing to take down candidates a peg."

Les Lynn runs Chicago Debate Committee, a program for 76 high schools. He says President Obama forgot the first rule of debating: engage your opponent.

"Barack Obama has to view the debate different. He's got to go all in," Lynn said. "He's got to look at it as a contest in order to be re-elected. He didn't. I think he was looking for a draw."

Back on the Purdue campus, the computers found both men shared the same shortcoming Wednesday night.

"That emotional connection is perhaps the biggest deficit that both of these candidates are facing," said Kowal.

The campaigns themselves are also analyzing the debate, determining what worked and what didn't.

President Obama's national campaign spokesman told ABC7 Thursday the president knows he needs to come out swinging harder next time.

Keep in mind, at this stage of the game, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are competing for undecided voters, who will likely make the difference in battleground states, which according to the most recent ABC poll make up just 6 percent of the electorate.</dig:D3text>
