Teach Kids Manners

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources&id=8935815&rss=rss-wls-article-8935815

The gifts are unwrapped, kids are hopefully happy with what they got, and now it's time to say thanks.

<dig:D3text>Teach Your Kids Manners

The gifts are unwrapped, kids are hopefully happy with what they got, and now it's time to say thanks. In fact, the holidays are a great time for parents to teach their kids lifelong values - starting with thank you notes. Parenting expert Mary O'Donohue (http://www.maryodonohue.com), author of "When You Say 'Thank You,' Mean It ... And 11 Other Lessons for Instilling Lifelong Values in Your Children," came into our ABC7 studio to provide Dos and Don'ts on how to get your kids to express heartfelt gratitude for those holiday games and toys.

Mary's Tips:
1.
- DON'T withhold the toy until your child writes a 'thank you' note first.
- DO let your child have fun playing with the gift before expressing gratitude.

WHY?
Remember that the giver's intention was that your child would enjoy the gift, so let them do so. The gift was not meant to be something held hostage until a 'thank you' note was paid as ransom. When a child has played with a toy and really enjoyed it, that exuberance will come through when formal thanks are expressed.

2.
- DON'T force your kids to write traditional 'thank you' notes.
- DO insist they express their gratitude in a sincere way that is personal to them

WHY?
This is an opportunity for kids to take initiative and be creative! (Example: Mary's then-11-year-old son, when left to his own devices, took 3 days to create a construction paper scale model of the reversible set from the play Mary Poppins as a 'thank you' to her boss, who had invited them to the theatre. It even had moving parts, with a door that opened to reveal a note of heartfelt thanks.) Kids will surprise you!

3.
- DON'T just say "It's the thought that counts" when kids don't like a gift
- DO help kids see the meaning behind every gift they receive.

WHY?
Because there's more to a gift than meets the eye. Let's say your kids received holiday reindeer cardigans from grandma. Help them "rewind" the process, so they see that before grandma gift-wrapped the sweaters, she knitted them by hand over the course of several weeks. Before that, she carefully chose the colors of yarn, and paid for it herself. And, even before that, she thought of her grandkids and figured out a way to express how much she loves them. Kids can be grateful for that generous and loving process even if they're not crazy about reindeer sweaters!

4.
- DON'T just encourage kids to be grateful for holiday and birthday gifts.
- DO remind your kids to express gratitude throughout the year for those intangible gifts they receive every day.

WHY?
Because these gifts of friendship, compassion, laughter, comfort, and joy given to them by the people in their lives, often go unnoticed and unappreciated. These are the gifts that matter most.</dig:D3text>

For Your Family: Sleep, Recall, 'Hatched It' app

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources&id=8855475&rss=rss-wls-article-8855475

In this "For Your Family," kids, sleep, and better behavior in school are all connected!

<dig:D3text>In this "For Your Family," kids, sleep, and better behavior in school are all connected!

Just an extra 30 minutes of sleep per night can make a big difference. Researchers studied children between 7 and 11 years old. Their normal sleep time: nine hours a night. Their teachers did the evaluations, and here's what they found: those who slept 30 minutes more, started doing better in behavior and emotions, and those who slept less in the study started behaving not so well in school.

Also, there's a big recall on children's clothing affecting fleece hoodie and t-shirt sets sold exclusively at Target by Children's Apparel Network. The coating on the zippers could have excessive levels of lead. The hoodies and t-shirts are meant for toddlers, who often put zippers in their mouths. Consumers can return the items to Target for a full refund.

Lastly, a cool new app is available, created by two moms to help make your life a little more organized. It basically allows you to share your calendar and your to-do lists. It's by "Hatched It" and allows users to share school activities, sports, any important dates with grandparents, babysitters, and you can share a to-do list with your family. If you're packing for a trip, for example, it can help you put together a master list that everyone in your family has on their phone. They can also add to the list or check completed when it is done. No more confusion!

For Your Family: Research and treatments in fight against breast cancer

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources&id=8847572&rss=rss-wls-article-8847572

Rita Nanda, an oncologist with University of Chicago Hospital, talks to ABC7 about the latest in the treatment and research for breast cancer.

<dig:D3text>Rita Nanda, Oncologist, University of Chicago Hospital

WHAT: For Your Family- latest research and treatments in the fight against breast cancer

JUDY'S SUGGESTED QUESTIONS AND DR. NANDA'S ANSWERS:
We've heard so much lately about getting a mammogram, not getting mammogram… what's the bottom line of what doctors are recommending?
We recommend that the average women begin having mammograms at the age of 40. Women who have strong family histories of early onset breast cancer may benefit from starting screening at a younger age or might benefit from breast MRI screening, so I would encourage women who are at high risk because of family history to discuss this concern with their primary care physician, who may wish to refer them for screening earlier than age 40.

Just 2 weeks ago, we heard about this major breakthrough on the genetics of breast cancer… does that offer new hope for better, more targeted treatment?
We've know for some time that breast cancer is NOT one disease and that multiple subtypes exist. The subtype of breast cancer a woman has is important in determining the appropriate therapy. However, within the subtypes of breast cancer, some women do better than others. By being able to study the expression profiles of thousands of genes within any given tumor is giving us insight into why some tumors may behave differently than others. This technology has provided us with a great tool to begin to understand why even within a subtype some tumors respond to treatment better than others. Many clinical trials trying to identify better treatments based on expression profiling are ongoing and will help us begin to learn how we can translate this technology more effective and more tailored treatments for women with breast cancer.

It's always stunning to hear the numbers, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer… is that number increasing/decreasing, any rhyme or reason?
Yes, in recent years the incidence of breast cancer has been declining. We know from the women's health initiative study that prolonged hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of developing breast cancer, and experts believe that the decline in incidence of breast cancer is related to decreased use of hormone replacement therapy for peri and postmenopausal women.

Any new research/breakthrough on prevention or a cure for breast cancer?
Women who are genetically predisposed to developing breast cancer can reduce their risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer by undergoing prophylactic removal of their breast and ovaries. Anti-estrogen therapy has also been shown to dramatically reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in women who are at high risk. Studies are ongoing nationally and at the University of Chicago investigating the roles of vitamin D, flaxseed and green tea on preventing breast cancer.</dig:D3text>

Cmsr. of the Food and Drug Administration Dr. Margaret Hamburg talked to ABC7 about this and shared some serious warnings for consumers.

For Your Family: Swine Flu

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/connect_kids&id=8779723&rss=rss-wls-article-8779723

More than 200 swine flu cases have been reported so far this year, compared with a dozen cases at this point last year.

<dig:D3text>Helpful Tips About Swine Flu:

-Swine influenza viruses do not usually cause problems in humans but occasionally someone will catch these "variant" versions of influenza virus from livestock. The H3N2variant virus is found mainly in pigs and seems to have picked up what is called the "M gene" from the pandemic H1N1 flu from 2009. Theoretically, this matrix gene is what makes this particular swine flu more likely to be transmitted to humans. The first cases were detected over a year ago.

- As of August 17th, 225 cases in 2012. Only 12 cases in 2011. Most had contact with swine while exhibiting or attending agricultural fairs. No significant increase in influenza-like illness but CDC continues to monitor. Only 3 cases in Illinois. Almost all infections happened after contact with swine. No sustained person-to-person transmission.

-After the agricultural fair season ends, these cases may fizzle out. Alternatively, the virus may evolve to be better at human-to-human transmission which could result in a steady increase in cases throughout the fall and into the winter. In that scenario, things would probably be similar to the 2009H1N1 season where early and ongoing spread of H1N1 replaced the usual flu season.

- The good news is that cases are clinically identical to seasonal influenza: fever, chills, muscle aches with respiratory symptoms like cough, sore throat, or runny nose. There does not appear to be any increased risk with H3N2v compared with seasonal influenza. That said, young children, elderly people, pregnant women, certain people with long-term medical conditions, and those with compromised immune systems are at risk of complications --just like for seasonal influenza.

- Unfortunately, last year's flu vaccine will not prevent this strain of flu and this year's vaccine has already been produced. I doubt it will cover this strain.

- If you have flu symptoms (fever, chills, and/or muscle aches, with cough, runny nose, sore throat, etc) and have had direct or close contact with swine, follow the usual CDC recommendations about seeking treatment for influenza. If you are very sick or have risk factors for complications, see your doctor and be sure to mention close or direct contact with swine. Some rapid tests may miss this flu virus but the University of Chicago test (and many other pcr-based tests) will detect it. Antiviral medications used to treat seasonal influenza are effective against H3N2v and are most useful if given in the first 48 hours of illness.

- Flu viruses have not been shown to be transmissible by eating or handling pork. That said, safe food handling procedures are still important to prevent transmission of other infections.

-Prevent infection in yourself and others by washing your hands regularly with soap and running water, especially after contact with animals. Special precautions should be taken by those who keep and care for pigs. These are available on the CDC website.</dig:D3text>

For Your Family: Actors Garden summer camp

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/connect_kids&id=8771374&rss=rss-wls-article-8771374

It's the middle of August, which means most kids are getting ready to head back to school.

<dig:D3text>For one group of children in the western suburbs, end of summer means gearing up for one of the biggest performances so far in their young acting careers.

For four weeks, a group of 7 to 15-year-olds spent every day at Dominican Universtiy rehearsing, creating, and growing at the Actors Garden summer theater camp.

"We have 65 children who come and learn how to sing, dance, put on a show. They learn how to paint Greek vases because this year we're doing a piece about Greece,'" said Gigi Hudson, Actors Garden artistic director.

The popular camp has long been a part of the western suburbs near the Oak Park-River Forest area, led by theater veteran Hudson. Many of her students come back year after year.

"I like the people, and they're practically like family," said 12-year-old Quentin Sanders.

"I really like the art projects that we do," said Mari Yamashita, 9. "We're making vases, and that I'm really interested in."

From painting Greek vases, to doing shadow puppets, to wearing a wig with snakes, the children learn to do whatever it takes to put on a show.

"I've always been a loud speaker, and now I just get to belt it out. There's nothing not to like about it," said Molly Tracy, 12.

The music and story are written every year specifically for the young actors. Everyone auditions. Everyone performs. Some have dreams of being on the big stage one day, but even for those who don't, it is a chance to shine nonetheless.

"Even if you have a small part, four lines...you always have one moment where you feel great and you shine on stage, and everybody has that chance," 13-year-old Benny Paris said.

"The first day they get here, they have to audition. Some of them are so scared to stand up there," said Hudson. "By the end of camp or first week, they're singing and dancing as loud as the most confident kid who's been here for years."

Monday, August 13 starts their last week of rehearsals. This year's show is called Off to Olympus. Of course the kids would love to have an audience. So, if you're interested in seeing the show this weekend, here are the show times:

Friday, August 17th, 7:00pm
Saturday, August 18th, 5:00pm
Saturday, August 18th, 11:00am
Saturday, August 18th, 2:00pm
Sunday, August 19th, 12:00pm
Sunday, August 19th, 3:00pm

<dig:D3text>It seems like teenagers these days communicate mostly via text messages of Facebook posts. So how can you make sure they know how to connect with others in the "real world?"

Author Maribeth Kuzmeski has written the book, "The Engaging Child: Raising Children To Speak, Write, And Have Relationship Skills Beyond Technology" (Red Zone Publishing, 2012, ISBN: 978-0-9717780-3-0, $18.95) (link: www.theengagingchild.com).
For Your Family: Concussions in young athletes

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/connect_kids&id=8515134&rss=rss-wls-article-8515134

A word of caution for parents of young athletes, especially hockey players: The rate of concussions in children is rising.

<dig:D3text>In Monday morning's For Your Family report, a word of caution for parents of young athletes, especially hockey players: The rate of concussions in children is rising at a dramatic rate.

Some doctors in the Chicago area say they are seeing the highest number of concussions in youth hockey players this year than ever before, and the concussion rate for a young player is nearly as high as professional players.

Dr. Jeff Mjaanes specializes in pediatric and adult sports medicine at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush.

Because a young player's brain is still developing, their brain:

- is more susceptible to a concussion
-is more likely to suffer long-term effects
- takes longer to recover
- is more likely to have a repeat concussion
- is harder to diagnose

Typical signs of concussions

Your child may have a concussion:
-if child suffers a blow then develops symptoms such as headache, dizziness, etc.
-if child develops worsening headache, persistent vomiting, true lethargy, you should take child to the emergency room for evaluation as the injury may be more serious

Something else parents should know: After your child suffers a concussion, they obviously have to stop playing for a while, but while they're recovering, it can also have an impact on their school work and how much they can study.

There is a tool to help with the diagnoses of concussions that families should know about, it's a base-line testing that they can do. A local organization is offering free base-line testing for young hockey players for the next two weeks. More information at www.rushortho.com http://www.rushortho.com
