<dig:D3text>Too often people forget those killed in combat. Now, a street sign will remind the neighborhood of Private First Class Omar Torres.

Six years ago, Torres, 20, was killed during combat in Baghdad. His parents, Oscar and Doris, were filled with pride and grief as an honorary street sign was unveiled in his name near 47th and Keeler.

"It's bittersweet, I would have to say. It's wonderful to have him recognized and honored on the street where he grew up but then once again he's not here to enjoy it," Doris Torres said.

"This is great. This is awesome. He was a great kid. I wish he was here with us. . . but again that's not going to happen," Oscar Torres said.</dig:D3text>

<dig:D3text>Fashion lovers can buy a piece of couture history at an auction that is part of an Ebony Fashion Fair exhibit.

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers's upcoming sale will feature a preview of the garments that will be auctioned off starting Tuesday. Clothing from design houses and icons such as as Yves St. Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Christian Lacroix and Patrick Kelly are among those featured.

The exhibit, which opens Saturday at the Chicago History Museum, is dubbed Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair and features more than 60 high fashion creations. Organizers say it will recreate the experience of the Ebony Fashion Fair through the garments.

The exhibit tells the story of the country's most popular traveling fashion show and the inspirational women behind it.

The exhibit runs through January 4th, 2014.</dig:D3text>

Irish Eyes smile, vote on Chicago as U.S. headquarters for St. Patrick's Day

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local/mathie&id=9024826&rss=rss-wls-article-9024826

St. Patrick's Day lasts longer than 24 hours in Chicago, and celebrations often stretch across a week- or more.

<dig:D3text>"Shamrock Chicago, for the past three months, has had the goal of recognizing our great city for what we all know it to be: the U.S. headquarters of St. Patrick's Day," Seamus Byrne, president Ireland Network Chicago, said.

Why Chicago? Well, the many St. Patrick's Day parades, of course, and the dying of the Chicago River green.

"The fact that we have the world's greatest Irish dancer alive, Michael Flatley," Bob McManamara said. "Or my mother if you want to go that route. My mother taught for 40 years."

St. Patrick's Day Parade Queen Bridget McMahan Fitzgerald presented a proclamation plaque to Consul General of Ireland Aiden Cronin. Yes, Chicago is all American--Irish.

So, now what thousands of Irish-American Chicagoans have known forever is official: Chicago is now the U.S. headquarters for St. Patrick's Day. All it took was a Chicago election. Twelve thousand votes were cast in an online election at ShamrockChicago2013.com. All votes were in favor of being the national headquarters for St. Patrick's Day. Not one was against.

Wait a second.

"It is an honest election," Marlene Byrnes, Shamrock Chicago. "Well, if you're honest, you only vote once and then you get your family to vote ... Absolutely."

But Consul General Cronin said the proclamation is beyond his power.

"I can't declare Chicago the headquarters. St. Patrick's Day is a worldwide celebration of the Irish, of Ireland and the headquarters of St. Patrick's Day is essentially Ireland and everything scatters out from that," Consul Cronin said.

Obviously Consul Cronin doesn't understand Chicago elections. Voting is still open- until Sunday midnight.</dig:D3text>

Rapping pastor preaches religion with rhyme

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local/mathie&id=8999022&rss=rss-wls-article-8999022

ABC7's Frank Mathie found an unusual career combination- a rapping pastor.

<dig:D3text>Some people are very good at combining careers, like football player and actor Jim Brown, or painter and singer Tony Bennett. ABC7's Frank Mathie found an even more unusual career combination- a rapping pastor.

University Church on the University of Chicago campus is headed by Pastor Julian Deshazier, 29.

He was born and raised in Chicago and is a graduate of U of C's Divinity School.

He says it is difficult to preach in a changing, younger world.

"Well, it's a challenge. You know we don't throw away the old classic message of gospel or of love, or peace and courage. Because those are words the church needs to continue to own. But we do have to re-package them," said Deshazier.

Deshazier re-packages religion in a very unusual way. He preaches religion with rhyme.

"Sometimes you have to do a little hip hop. During one of your sermons, if need be," he said.

Deshazier has been preaching for ten years and rapping professionally for five. Although they don't seem to go together, Deshazier believes the two are related.

"I don't think I rap religion. I think that I rap about life. I rap about the narrative of all our experiences... The same thing that sermons are about," he said.

Around the Chicago-area, the pastor is known by his rapper name, J Kwest.

"I grew up loving rap, participating in it and then it's just another part of who I am. I think a song in a lot of ways works a lot like the way a pastor works," he said.

However, he says he doesn't use rap as a pulpit.

"It never turns into a dogmatic kind of speech that's supposed to lead people in a certain way. What it really does is hopefully lead people into a greater understanding and awareness of themselves and their God," he said.</dig:D3text>

Two newborns have visitors at Lincoln Park Zoo asking the same question: What's a takin?

<dig:D3text>Just two weeks after a takin was born at Lincoln Park Zoo, a second baby takin was born. And, they have the same takin father, Quanli.

Both are males. And, their mothers get along just fine.

"We've got two calves born here in the last week and a half at Lincoln Park Zoo and you can see them on exhibit right now. They were introduced yesterday. The entire group brought back together and everything is going great," Dave Bernier, general curator at Lincoln Park Zoo, said.

The two new takin babies are just starting to learn that they are in for a lifetime of being confused with other animals. Just look at them. What are they? What do they look like?

A yak? An ox? A buffalo? Not quite. Takins are very unusual goats. . . great big, powerful goats from the mountains of China, where they are sometimes hunted for meat. Takin are also considered almost sacred beasts, and protected by the Chinese government.

"For the most part the species is pretty well revered and it's protected. This is one of the few species China has gone out of its way to protect. It's almost on the same level as panda in some regions of China," Bernier said.

Takin look so peaceful and gentle, but Bernier recommends staying away.

"They are very formidable animals. These are animals that we consider to be dangerous. We would never be in the same space with them," Bernier said.

The two tiny takin weigh about 25 pounds. When full grown, they could reach 600 pounds. So stop by Lincoln Park Zoo before they lose their cuteness.</dig:D3text>

Paczki are prevalent in Chicago, but the best are at authentic polish bakeries, like Delightful Pastries on West Lawrence.

Call if Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday or Paczki Day- it's a celebration of sweetness and calories and tongue-pleasing pleasure at Delightful Pastries. Lent begins tomorrow, and so does fasting from many of the good things in life.</dig:D3text>

<dig:D3text>Kekasih, a 4-year-old orangutan, has a new friend. Thani, 3, is a white-cheeked gibbon. Both apes live in Tropic World Asia at Brookfield Zoo, and their friendship is blossoming.

"All of a sudden Thani decided, about six weeks ago, to jump over to orangutan peninsula and visit Kekasih," Craig Demitros, Brookfield Zoo associate curator of primates, said.

Thani doesn't spend his whole day visiting his red-haired friend; he spends most of his time with his family. But Kekasih? Well, she spends many anxious moments apparently pining away for her new friend.

After about an hour wait, Thani popped up out of nowhere. At first, the two sized each other up. They didn't make much contact. But now, after several weeks, the two apes have become swinging huggers.

"That's basically play behavior," Demitros said. "Sort of play wrestling, arm wrestling, leg wrestling."

While there are reports of other different species of apes having play-dates, it's not something that happens in the wild: the gibbon ape is from Southeast Asia; the orangutans are from Borneo.</dig:D3text>

<dig:D3text>Karl Lau was 19 years old when he flew missions in the South Pacific off the aircraft carrier Lexington during World War II.
He pays tribute to that memory with store, "On Final Approach," located in Glenview, Ill., which is full of artifacts from the war. The building is full off

"This is a place where you can see old artifacts, pictures and everything. It's a collection of old prints that pilots have signed. We have books ... Everything," Lau said.

Lau, 86, flew 12 missions in the U.S. Navy's Corsair Fighter. Now that plane's cockpit, about four-fifths actual size, lives again thanks to Lau.

Lau's collection is more than 60 years old. At first, he picked up artifacts for his own satisfaction. But as the years went by, he turned it into a business. Now he collects to buy, fix up, and sell.

Lau is in good health, but admits he's also on his own final approach.

"My flaps are down. My wheels are down and I'm back on idle," Lau said. "When I land I will taxi over to the hanger and cut the engine and say mission accomplished."

<dig:D3text>Giving back to people who give back. A plumbing company is helping flush away a Make-A-Wish volunteer's money worries.

It's something homeowners fear. A back hoe in the front yard digging up the lawn looking for a crushed and clogged sewer pipe. For Gloria Voit of wheeling it's been a three week disaster. No washing, no flushing.

"It's a nightmare to me. When they told me they had to dig in the ground I couldn't believe it and the expense is pretty high too," Voit said.

But then along came Vinay Rajput, owner of Mr. Rooter Plumbing in Schaumburg. His crew showed up to make sure Voit's troubles flow away.

"We're going to put in a new pipe, 5' to 6' long and we'll also do a clean out rod so that way she can maintain the line in the future," Rajput said.

Normally that would cost $5,000 to $6,000. But Voit is on Social Security, a fixed income. There's no way could she afford this job but then along came the plumbers. Tough guys -- with soft hearts.

They're doing the work for free because Voit has dedicated the last 10 years of her life to the Make A Wish Foundation, an organization that grants big time wishes to seriously ill children.</dig:D3text>

Which winter hat is the best?

it's one of those days that hurts. Jack Frost is nipping at your nose and ears and all exposed skin.

<dig:D3text>it's one of those days that hurts. Jack Frost is nipping at your nose and ears and all exposed skin. It's been a long time since the hawk has blown into Chicago like this. Wind chill breezes are on the attack, and the Chicago River looks like it might actually begin to freeze. It's time for the cold weather battle gear - hats and scarfs from the back of the closet.

"I'm actually using a hat and my hood on top because I'm from Argentina and down there now it's 100 degrees. So it's kind of different," said one man.

One man said he's got a beard to keep warm.

"That's the reason I'm growing it. I grow it until the temperature gets above 50 for three days running. So this will stay with me until then, and I shave all my hair off... I'm not embarrassed to wear this at all," he said.

"You've got to cover up the face and the neck, otherwise you're toast. Or you're toast if you have this on, it's nice and toasty... It's kind of a Batman, bank robber look, isn't it?" said one man.

The cold weather hat game has absolutely no rules and no regulations. The fashion police do not exist.

"I'm from Wyoming, and it's a trappers hat," said one pedestrian.

And away she goes, off to trap another cold weather hat reporter.

So it's different hats for different heads, and as long as it works that's great. However, what about those people who don't wear hats at all? What are they thinking?

"There's no way I'm going to wear a hat," said one pedestrian whose ears were purple.</dig:D3text>

Rescued sea lions find home at Shedd

<dig:D3text>Tanner comes from the Columbia River in Oregon. Chinook salmon swim upstream to spawn in the Columbia River, which makes them easy picking for sea lions.

"Unfortunately California Sea Lions learned if they swam a hundred and twenty five miles upriver and sat on the fish ladder they could catch the salmon as they went up stream and have a free smorgasbord of food," Ken Ramirez, executive VP animal care and training, said.

Tanner turned out to be a glutton. He was eating so much salmon, about 90 pounds a day, that wildlife officials were threatening to kill him. That's when the Shedd stepped in to save this salmon lover.

Cruz, a 60-pound male, was abandoned near Santa Cruz.

"As he was brought into the marine mammal center in California it was found that he had been shot with a shotgun and has shrapnel in his head and is totally blind," Ramirez said.

Cruz is being trained to earn his feed, but his target is like a baby rattle.

"He uses it exactly like the sighted animals except instead of using his eyes he's just listening for it and that's what guides him from place to place," Cruz said.</dig:D3text>

Restaurateurs build Great Northwest-style pizzeria -- log by log

<dig:D3text>Josh Iachelli and Clay Hamilton are in the process of fulfilling a crazy dream- bringing Oregon, and lots of logs, to Chicago.

"We brought in logs from our hometown in Oregon," Clay Hamilton said. "We wanted to create a unique atmosphere that reminded us of where Josh and I are from and kind of show Chicago a little something different."

Using the same basic techniques as the pioneers, Iachelli and Hamilton are transforming the Midwest into the Northwest with two truckloads of Oregon logs, most of which are 100 years old- or older.

"We spend fifteen hours a day here on a short day," Iachelli said. "Heavy work, yeah. . . . Some of these logs range from 200 to 500 pounds."

This isn't a log cabin out in the wilderness somewhere. It's on the North Side of Chicago near Webster near Halsted. And by the end of February, this log cabin will be a pizza restaurant called Homeslice.

Homeslice will dish out Great Northwest-style pizza.

"It's a hand tossed artisan pizza with a fluffy, flaky outer crust," Iachelli said.

But before they can turn on the ovens, they have to keep cooking with the logs.</dig:D3text>

<dig:D3text>Bad publicity put the Chevrolet Corvair out of production, but one suburban man keeps the controversial car from the 1960s running.

"I specialize in Chevrolet Corvairs. It's my job and my passion," Larry Claypool, owner of The Vair Shop in Frankfort, said, "since November of 1972. So about forty years."

That was when Claypool was just 18. Corvair owners say he's the best at keeping the old cars running. They come from all around the Midwest to give new life to their cars at The Vair Shop. Sheri Fridele found her Corvair in California, and had it shipped to Claypool.

"I had a '62 [back] in the day. It was my first car," Fridele said. "Now I have another one and I love it."

The trunk is in the front and the air-cooled, six-cylinder engine is in the rear.

"This was to be the American Volkswagen. It's what the Corvair started life as," Claypool said.</dig:D3text>
